A recent report named “How Safe Are You on Britain’s Roads?” published by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) has highlighted some of the most dangerous roads in the country.
According to the wide reaching report, road users are most at risk on a 12-mile coastal route in Southern England, where there were 39 fatal and serious crashes between 2007-2012.
It is just one in a number of persistently treacherous roads where the toll of deaths and serious injuries are ‘unacceptably high’.
The top 10 most dangerous roads named by the report also included:
Top 10 most dangerous roads
1. A285 – 12 miles – Petworth to Chichester, West Sussex A27 to A272
2. A809 – 10 miles – Glasgow to the A811
3. A937 – 8 miles – Montrose to the A90 (Laurencekirk)
4. A18 – 10 miles – Laceby to Ludborough near Grimsby
5. A6 – 6 miles – M6 junction 33 to Lancaster
6. A61 – 6 miles – Wakefield and the M1 junction 44
7. A36 – 4 miles – A3090 to Totton in Hampshire
8. A589 – 5 miles – Full route around Lancaster
9. A643 – 7 miles – Brighouse to Morely in Yorkshire
10. A4300 – 4 miles – Full route through Kettering
It is noted that many of these routes run through rural areas or national parks, where the risk can be particularly high. According to the report six out of ten fatal crashes on Britain’s roads occur on rural routes.
The report also revealed…
- Risk of death and serious injury on motorways and A Roads is lowest in the West Midlands
- This risk is highest in the East Midlands
- A quarter of deaths to road users are caused by running off the road
- Single carriage A-Roads pose a much higher risk to road users (almost 7 times greater than motorways)
- Junction collisions are the most common cause of serious injury to drivers
- Motorcyclists only account for 1% of traffic but around 21% of fatal crashes
