First Snow Causes Serious Injuries

It has been reported that the first snowfall of the season has already caused a string of serious injuries up and down the UK.

It follows recent severe weather warnings issued by the Met Office, advising the public to ‘be aware’ of exceptionally strong winds and freezing temperatures.

Winter weather can cause a whole variety of hazardous conditions, and with such bad weather forecast over the next few weeks, the potential for accidents is likely to increase even more. With this in mind we bring you a guide to some common places you are likely to be injured in bad weather and how you can avoid an accident.

At work

Entrances to factories, warehouses and offices are often affected by bad weather, causing potential slip hazards, which could result in serious injuries.

Back injuries, slips, trips and falls are all common in the workplace especially during winter when many businesses are taking on temporary members of staff. All employers should promote a productive and safe environment, ensuring that each member of staff is fully trained in safe practises and procedures.

On the roads

In the run up to Christmas it’s inevitable that many of us will be packing up the car and travelling some distance to visit friends and relatives. Drivers in particular have been warned to take extra caution over the next few weeks and allow additional time on their travels before snow and ice cause widespread disruption.

Driving in severe winter weather poses many challenges and even the most experienced drivers can be tested by ice and snow. It’s vital that motorists follow tried and tested procedures to ensure their safety and reduce the risk of serious road traffic accidents – take a look at our vital tips for driving in the snow to find out how to stay safe.

Out & about

Wear footwear appropriate for the conditions when you’re out and about over the next few weeks. Avoid running and using any distracting devices when the weather gets particularly bad.
