What to Expect After a Head Injury

When you suffer a traumatic head or brain injury, it can have a huge impact on your life and recovery can be a long, drawn out process.

Every injury is unique and will affect different people in different ways but here are a few common changes you can expect after a head injury.

Cognitive and physical changes

Many people won’t start to experience symptoms until hours, days or even weeks after an accident.

Symptoms usually disappear without treatment, however some people may need on-going therapy or even surgery to relieve symptoms following a head injury.

You may experience:

Physical symptoms

  • A persistent/severe headache
  • Vomiting
  • Stiffness in the neck
  • Numbness/tingling in arms and legs
  • Blurred/double vision
  • Sensitivity to bright light
  • Seizures
  • High temperature

Cognitive symptoms

  • Short attention span
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Memory problems
  • Anxiety
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty sleeping

Recovery time

Most people should see improvement in symptoms within 6 months, and steadily get better from then on.

Recovery time largely depends on the severity of the injury. While some people make a rapid recovery from a head injury, others may live with long-term complications and in particularly severe cases, a head injury can prove fatal.

If you are concerned about developing symptoms following a head injury seek medial attention immediately. Bear in mind that symptoms may not always develop straight away. It is also advised that you don’t go back to your normal activities until you are fully recovered.

A head or brain injury can have a lasting impact on the way your live your life causing on-going pain and suffering.

If the injury was caused by another party you may be entitled to claim compensation. When it comes to an injury as serious as one to your head or brain, then it is important to get expert legal advice before proceeding.
