Crashes Rise by Quarter on 20mph Roads

While many people may associate road traffic accidents with speeding on open roads and motorways, new research has shown that it is in fact 20mph roads that are the most dangerous, with serious accidents rising by over a quarter last year.

The analysis of the government data came from IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) who called for the government to “take stock on the effectiveness of 20mph signs”.

Simon Best, Chief Executive of the IAM, stated:

“Recent advice, guidance and relaxation of regulations has all been about making it easier for councils to put 20mph limits in place.

“More and more roads are being given a 20mph limit but they do not seem to be delivering fewer casualties.

“The IAM is concerned that this is because simply putting a sign on a road that still looks like a 30mph zone does not change driver behaviour.

“In locations with a proven accident problem, authorities need to spend more on changing the character of our roads so that 20mph is obvious, self-enforcing and above all contributes to fewer injuries.

The data also revealed that in the same year, serious accidents on 30mph roads declined, dropping by 9% as did 40mph roads, which were down 7%.

There is no doubt that money spent on these 20mph schemes would significantly decrease the risk of being injured in a collision, and would help to reduce the number of traffic injuries in the UK, however there has been much concern that 20mph zones aren’t being reinforced enough both physically and visually. For this reason cyclists and pedestrians are still at risk in built up areas.
