Bank Worker Sues Employer for £1.5m

An employee of an exclusive Knightsbridge bank is seeking £1.5m in compensation after she was left in “unbearable pain” from moving boxes.

32-year-old Shilpa Pattani worked in the marketing department of the bank between 2007-2009 and claims she was left with crippling back injuries after her employers continuously dumped heavy boxes of promotional material on and around her desk.

Miss Pattani stated that she was regularly expected to shift over 100kg of brochures and promotional material while she was working at the bank, despite weighing less than nine stone herself.

She told High Court judge, Mr Justice Phillips that she developed “unbearable pain” in her back and “complained that boxes and shipments were dumped on my desk” but was ignored.

“I was sick of the lifting,” she said. “I was asked to put things into the marketing cupboard at different heights. I sent an email to my manager saying ‘stop dumping things around my desk, on my desk and on the floor round my desk, because it’s hurting my back’.

“My manager was ignoring those requests,” she added.

She also revealed to the court that, during several exhibitions at trade fairs, she was required to shift 200kg of promotional material each time, and also complained that she had to shift “heavy boxes of invitations” when the bank held a private banker’s dinner and art show.

The excessive lifting and working conditions during her time at the bank led to Miss Pattani developing Fibromyalgia, a crippling long-term condition that causes widespread muscular pain, causing her to quit her job in June 2009.

Fibromyalgia can be triggered spontaneously, however it is usually caused by accident or trauma. Common causes include road traffic accidents (RTA’s), whiplash, or sudden, forceful lifting of a heavy object.
