Action For Brain Injury Week

This week (12th – 18th May 2014) marks Action for Brain Injury week.

What will you be doing this week to make a difference to the lives of brain injury survivors, their families and their support team?

The annual event is organised by UK charity Headway, and this year the charity will be aiming to highlight the issues surrounding caring for someone with brain injury.

Also highlighted this year are the cuts to welfare benefits, local authority and NHS budgets which are continuing to have devastating impacts on survivors lives.

Headway was registered as a charity back in 1980 after there were calls to improve rehabilitation and aftercare following surgery for brain injury.

The aim of their work today is primarily to improve quality of life after a brain injury and provide support and advice for people affected.

In the UK alone, more then 2,500 people suffer from a brain injury every day. Brain injuries can happen to anyone at any time and often come with life changing consequences – many people wake up and find they are unable to recognise their own family and friends and are faced with having to rebuild their life from scratch.

During Action for Brain Injury Week, Headway invites businesses, clubs, schools, nurseries and individuals up and down the country to get involved in activities to help raise the money needed to continue providing vital services.

The week also aims to raise awareness of the devastating effects of brain injury and the impact it has on the whole family.

As with every year, Headway is holding the “Hats for Headway” event on Friday 16th May.  Anyone can take part, and the day encourages people to wear their favourite hat (the funnier the better) to work, college or school for a day.
