Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

After you are involved in an accident, the consequences may not just be physical as a lot of people will also sustain some kind of mental injury. One of the most severe mental injuries seen by those who have been victims of trauma or physical injury is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, better known as PTSD.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a condition that may develop after a person experiences or witnesses a traumatic or terrifying event. Although it is usually caused by Military combat, many other events can also lead to this condition such as:

  • Deaths
  • Violent assaults
  • Serious road traffic accidents
  • Hostage situations
  • Terrorist attacks
  • Natural and manmade disasters

Following that event, injury or accident, you may experience serious symptoms that will last for a long period of time, some of which may prevent you from functioning as you did before.

Some of the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder include:

  • Insomnia (being unable to sleep)
  • Flashbacks and nightmares, which may or may not be violent
  • Communication difficulties
  • Intense feelings of isolation
  • Problems managing your anger
  • Feeling depressed
  • Feeling irritable
  • Extreme physical reactions to memories such as, increased heart rate, nausea, sweating.

In order to make a successful claim for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, you must be able to give evidence that your condition or symptoms were a direct result of the event or accident you experienced. Although it can be difficult, it is possible to make a claim for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder without any physical injuries.

If you feel that you have developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder because of an accident that wasn’t your fault, then you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation.
